Dear talented young people, The lights of the future of humanity — I wish you all the best in your endeavours in this competition and the chance to visit the University of Cambridge. The Japanese people are famous for good reasons: their austerity, modesty, intellect, and culture. I am sure you will be great ambassadors for your nation and pave a bright future for the coming generations as you learn from your visits around the world, including this great University of Cambridge. I also remember vividly my visit in 2022 to Chuo University Suginami High School, where I gave a lecture. It was my very first time to speak at a Japanese high school, and I was deeply impressed when the students asked if the question-and-answer session after my lecture could be conducted entirely in English. Those students have likely already graduated by now, but if their juniors work hard and win the Cambridge tour, the promise I made to them — that we would meet again at the University of Cambridge next time - will surely be fulfilled. Dear students, Be brave and take on the challenge of the English Vocabulary Championship, and win your place in the one-week summer tour. This challenge will surely open up limitless possibilities for you. For young people, taking on challenges is essential. They say that winning and losing is a matter of luck, but after embracing a challenge, you will be able to see and experience a world you have never known before. "Always challenge yourself" — that is the belief I held when I was young. After your visit to the University of Cambridge, I sincerely hope you will also come and visit the University of Oxford. We truly look forward to meeting you there. I wish you the very best in your challenge. Best regards, Roger Goodman Warden of St Antony's College University of Oxford Professor Roger Goodman, CBE, FAcSS, DPhil. Dear High School Students of Japan with ambitions, Many of you no doubt carry dreams of one day playing an active role on the global stage like Shohei Ohtani. I was once a high school student with similar ambition. Guided by my parent, I had a great opportunity study abroad including the University of Oxford. I still remember that for the first few months in the UK, I did not comprehend the entire conversation from time to time. Thanks to my tutors, supervisors and professors, I was lucky enough to get one of the best jobs then. One of these resulted in getting married Anglophile wife living in Oxford since 2003. Another result is co-founded Japan's first "decacorn" (private company with the market cap over $10 billion), GVE, whose estimated market capitalization exceeded Yen 3.2 trillion as of last week. All of these results will not come if I do not comprehend and speak English. Now, I would like to congratulate The UNIV.CAMBRIDGE JAPAN ACADEMY to set up the First National High School English Vocabulary Championship. The top performers will be invited to visit the colleges of our rival, the University of Cambridge. This is something truly exciting and inspiring opportunity for you all. Who will become the champion? Which school will rise to claim the crown? I believe the first champion will be rewarding as it will help you to achieve to open the door to the world with your own hands beyond Japan. Hope the champion will visit Oxford and Koto Oxford, the restaurant my wife runs as well. I look forward with great anticipation to witnessing your achievements. Yours sincerely, Koji Fusa CEO, GVE Ltd.
